The MEMdoc Initative
MEMdoc is an initiative of the University of Bern Institute for Evaluative Research in Orthopaedic Surgery (IEFO), Bern, Switzerland, with the help of various other orthopaedic and information technology collaborators.
The IEFO has defined its mission as a dedicated academic research center for advancing the field of orthopaedic surgery by education, documentation, and evaluation. It is the center's philosophy that each of these components is crucial to its overall mission of contributing to the national and international improvement as well as maintenance of quality orthopaedic care.
Through the continuation of its mission, IEFO has embarked on an ambitious project in early 2000 by establishing a new concept in the collection, archiving, and distribution of orthopaedic data. The focus was not limited to generalized clinical data, but was indeed expanded to include all clinical, surgical, radiological, implant, and patient data. A new centralized documentation concept, based on an optimized clinical workflow, was introduced with an accent on a flexible and modular design. Early contact and interest from the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT) and the Spine Society of Europe (SSE) helped successfully gauge the feasibility of implementation of such a concept on national and European levels.
